Another Eurotrip! What?
This year was completely different from our trip last year. This year was a proper city explorer trip, rock festival and meeting up with old friends.
My first trip to Belgium was in 2002, exactly 10 years ago, so it was completely fitting for me to go back, again (if you have to try and justify it :) ) Also, another important point to mention is that I was told about Rock Werchter the first time I went to Belgium, so for ten years I've been wanting to go to the festival.
My flatmate, Pieter, turned 30 this year and his gift to himself was a Rock Werchter ticket. Off course when I heard this, I invited myself and bought a ticket as well. Soon after we got Joe on board as well and waited for D-day to arrive.
Our first stop was Amsterdam. We were met by Herman and Cynthia at Schipol airport. Herman has just returned from 7 months in Canada and before he flew to Amsterdam, I only got to see him for one evening. Cynthia left Cape Town in January and I haven't seen her since, so it was good seeing them on arrival in Amsterdam.
We checked in to our awesome hostel in Warmoes Street slap bam in the middle of the red light district. Yes, I know this sounds dodgy, but wasn't at all. St. Christopher's hostel was amazing, slightly expensive, but a really good deal all in all. They are very centrally located - super close to Central Station and right in the middle of everything. They even give you a continental breakfast buffet in the mornings FOC. Being situated in the red light district, it was sort of compulsory to drink before going to bed. The hostel also turns into a club at night so it's difficult to sleep when sober.
Anyways immediately on arrival we ordered a couple of local beers and started with our long overdue catch up. Some of Pieter's friends showed up and we all went to Vondelpark for hotdogs. Best hotdog ever!
The red light district was waiting for our return and we explored on our first evening :)
